Happy Monday Mothers

It’s the end of a rather long Monday.  After a busy weekend, everyone was tired and not ready to start the week.  The dishes were piled high, laundry baskets overflowing, and toys scattered through the house.  A birthday party, cake baking, and Mother’s Day definitely left its mark on our house.  And today, it was all there for me to clean up.

So, what happens when it’s not Mothers Day?  After the flowers die, the gift certificates are used, and the cards get tucked away.  What about the days when there are no “thank you”‘s and no one saying how wonderful you are.  Chances are, you’ll get out of bed and carry out your normal routine.  You’ll smile and kiss the kids as they go off to school.  You’ll wash the dishes for the millionth time.  Because that’s what we do when it’s not Mothers Day.

I was reminded today, as I attempted to clear the wreckage in our home, of the privilege of motherhood.  It’s a calling not everyone gets to experience.  Beyond the messes and tantrums, lies eternal value.  Behind the sticky hands and trail of goldfish, is treasure.  No other job on the planet bears such responsibility, while the payoff is never ending love.  No where else can you be so tired and yet your heart is full.  And even though the hours are long and the demand unending, the reward outweighs the cost.

So, even when no one tells you, you’re doing a great job.  Those little mouths may not always say it, but you are irreplaceable.  If God has called you to be a mother, He has supplied the grace and strength you need to do it.  He understands the demands and sees you when you feel unnoticed.  God entrusted us, as moms, to be His hands and feet.  To speak His words of life to our children and help them follow His path.  And even though I stumble often, He is always there to supply the wisdom and mercy I need.  He picks me up and nudges me back out there.  Because He knows I’m what they need.  Because He wants them to see the Jesus in me.
